Solitary Pulmonary Nodule

Solitary Pulmonary Nodule: When to Investigate

A solitary pulmonary nodule is a small nodule in the lung that is usually discovered incidentally on a chest X-ray or CT scan. Although it is worrisome to patients, it does not necessarily mean cancer. Proper assessment and monitoring by a specialized pulmonologist is essential for a safe diagnosis.

What is a solitary pulmonary nodule?

  • It is a shadow in the lung, less than 3 centimeters in diameter.
  • It can be benign (e.g. the result of an old infection or inflammation) or malignant (e.g. incipient lung cancer).
  • It is often detected incidentally during tests performed for another reason.

Causes of pulmonary nodule appearance

  • Benign lesions: previous infections, granulomas, hamartoma.
  • Malignant tumors: primary lung cancer or metastases from other organs.
  • Infections: bacterial or fungal that leave scars in the lung.

When is follow-up or investigation needed?

The need for further testing depends on:

  • Size of the nodule: those smaller than 6 millimeters are often simply monitored. Larger nodules require more detailed examination.
  • Patient history: smokers, people with a family history of cancer or previous malignancies belong to a high-risk group.
  • Morphology on CT scan: nodules with irregular borders or rapid increase in size require immediate investigation.

How is the diagnosis and monitoring done?

At Dr. Alexis Politis’ office in Kavala, the most modern methods are applied for accurate evaluation:

  1. Imaging tests
    • High-resolution chest CT scan.
    • Comparison with previous tests to see if the nodule has changed.
  2. PET/CT scan
    • Examines the metabolic activity of the nodule and helps to distinguish benign from malignant lesions.
  3. Lung biopsy or bronchoscopy
    • Taking a tissue sample for histological examination in suspicious cases.
  4. Systematic monitoring
    • Repeat CT scans at regular intervals to monitor progression.

Why is early diagnosis important

The correct evaluation of the pulmonary nodule allows:

  • The early diagnosis of lung cancer at an early stage.
  • The avoidance of unnecessary interventions on benign lesions.
  • The elimination of anxiety with clear answers and guidance.
