Lung cancer is one of the most common and serious forms of cancer worldwide. Despite its seriousness, early diagnosis and the right treatment strategy can significantly improve the prognosis and quality of life of patients.
Dr Alexis Politis’ pulmonology clinic in Kavala provides a comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic approach based on the most modern scientific data.
What is lung cancer?
Lung cancer develops when lung cells begin to multiply uncontrollably. It is divided into two main types:
- Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC): It accounts for 85% of cases and includes adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and large cell carcinoma.
- Small cell lung cancer (SCLC): Less common but much more aggressive type, with rapid spread.
Symptoms you should not ignore

- Persistent cough that does not subside
- Hemoptysis (coughing up blood)
- Dyspnea or shortness of breath

👉 If you experience one or more of the above, immediate evaluation by a pulmonologist is necessary.

Diagnosis of lung cancer
Diagnosis requires a combination of highly accurate tests:
- Imaging: chest x-ray, high-definition chest CT scan.
- Bronchoscopy & biopsy: taking a sample for histological examination.

Staging
The staging of lung cancer is necessary to determine the appropriate treatment:
- Stage I: the tumor is limited to the lung.
- Stage II: extension to neighboring lymph nodes.
- Stage III: spread to the mediastinum.
- Stage IV: metastases to other organs.
Treatment options
Treatment is individualized depending on the type and stage of the disease:
- Surgical removal of the tumor (in the early stages).
