What Are Respiratory Infections
Respiratory tract infections are among the most common causes of cough, fever, and shortness of breath.
They may affect the upper respiratory tract (pharyngitis, bronchitis) or the lower respiratory tract (pneumonia).
Although in most cases they are viral and self-limiting, sometimes a pulmonology evaluation is required to rule out more serious conditions.
When Evaluation Is Needed
It is important to consult a pulmonologist when:
- Cough persists for more than 10–15 days
- Fever persists or recurs
- There is chest pain, shortness of breath or hemoptysis
- There is a history of recurrent bronchitis or pneumonia
- There is a chronic condition (COPD, asthma, heart disease, diabetes)
How the Evaluation Is Performed in the Clinic
The assessment includes:
- Clinical examination and lung auscultation
- Pulse oximetry and spirometry to assess respiratory function
- Chest X-ray or CT scan when pneumonia is suspected
- When necessary, sputum culture or viral infection testing
Early diagnosis helps ensure appropriate treatment and prevents complications.
Treatment Approach
Treatment is individualized depending on the cause (viral or bacterial).
It includes:
- Guidance for antibiotic or supportive treatment
- Instructions for restoring respiratory function
- Follow-up in persistent or recurrent cases
Proper pulmonology follow-up is critical, especially in smokers and vulnerable groups.
