What Is Childhood Asthma
Childhood asthma is a chronic inflammatory condition of the bronchi that causes children to cough,
experience difficulty breathing, or develop wheezing (a whistling sound in the chest).
Episodes often occur after a cold, intense play, or exposure to allergens such as dust, pollen, or pet dander.
When an Evaluation Is Needed
Assessment by a pulmonologist is necessary when the child:
- Has recurrent cough, especially at night or after exertion
- Gets tired easily during play or running
- Experiences wheezing or a feeling of chest tightness
- Has frequent “bronchitis” or “colds that last a long time”
- Has a history of allergies or atopic dermatitis (eczema)
How the Evaluation Is Performed in the Clinic
The assessment includes:
- Clinical examination and detailed medical history (personal and family)
- Child-adapted spirometry (when the child is cooperative)
- Skin prick allergy tests in cases of suspected allergic asthma
- Guidance on environmental control and prevention of asthma attacks
The goal is accurate diagnosis and parental education, so they can recognize and prevent asthma attacks.
Treatment Approach
Management of childhood asthma is based on:
- Controlled treatment with inhaled medications (when necessary)
- Avoidance of allergens and proper environmental hygiene
- Regular follow-up with a pulmonologist
In most children, asthma improves or may completely resolve with age when proper guidance is provided.
